{"id":3396,"date":"2023-04-19T14:32:00","date_gmt":"2023-04-19T14:32:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wanetam.net\/?p=3396"},"modified":"2023-04-19T14:32:00","modified_gmt":"2023-04-19T14:32:00","slug":"paragon-genomics-skills-to-strengthen-malaria-genomic-surveillance-in-west-africa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cpchq.org\/new\/paragon-genomics-skills-to-strengthen-malaria-genomic-surveillance-in-west-africa\/","title":{"rendered":"Paragon Genomics skills to strengthen malaria genomic surveillance in West Africa"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A Paragon Genomics Malaria Amplicon Panel training was recently concluded by the Malaria Population Biology (MPB) group at the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lshtm.ac.uk\/research\/units\/mrc-gambia\"> MRC Unit The Gambia at London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM).<\/a> The intensive 11-day training focused on a new&nbsp; multiplexed PCR Next Generation Sequencing panel, developed at the<a href=\"https:\/\/eppicenter.ucsf.edu\/\"> EPPIcenter, University of California, San Francisco (UCSF)<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Delivered by Eric Vickers Neubauers from the group of Prof Bryan Greenhouse at UCSF, the training provided hands-on laboratory as well as data analysis and bioinformatics sessions. It is expected to build upon existing expertise on the amplicon toolkit developed by the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.malariagen.net\/\"> MalariaGEN<\/a> program at the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sanger.ac.uk\/\"> Wellcome Sanger Institute<\/a>, strengthening capacity for malaria molecular surveillance in West Africa across several projects (EGSAT, GSM, WANETAM) led by<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lshtm.ac.uk\/aboutus\/people\/ngwa.alfred\"> Professor Alfred Amambua-Ngwa<\/a>, Professor of Genetic Epidemiology at<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lshtm.ac.uk\/\"> LSHTM<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Dr Dominic S.Y. Amuzu one of the trainees, the Paragon Genomics CleanPlex Technology allows exploration of genetic diversity and evolution of the malaria parasites. He highlighted that the technology also supports identification of drug resistance markers and potential vaccine targets which will address the challenge of the clusters of highly \u201cA-T\u201d rich regions in the genome of the parasite.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe use of this technology will accelerate the translation of genomic data to support policy and approaches on malaria therapeutic interventions, and the development of new strategies to control the disease as its epidemiology changes in Africa and beyond\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For Blessed Etoketim, Scientific Officer at MRCG at LSHTM and a trainee, leveraging the features of the Illumina NGS platform is time- and labour-saving, and highly cost-effective. Thus, it will enable researchers and assay developers to uncover malaria parasite diversity even in resource limited settings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cParticipating in this training has now equipped me with the skills to contribute more significantly towards genomics-related research at MRC Unit The Gambia and will also be relevant to my intended postgraduate research.
